Seer 02:18
What if I wasn't who I thought I was? Just a pale shadow that's covered in blood And since I came here on a ship made of bone Other pale shadows left me here alone Impossible, Impossible, Impossible dream What if I was an imposter in Sweden Who projects to my body while he is asleep And since he lives in 6th century B.C. That's why he just wants to watch my TV Impossible, Impossible, Impossible dream
3.
The Bardo 05:11
Listen to the way that I click my teeth together to the storm pulling down the trees to the way that we found ourselves in a hole by the side of the highway to the things that we wanted to be. Finish a sentence but can't finish a thought. Lincoln's in the Bardo waitin' 'round for everyone to tell their story. Filling up the silence with a bunch of words that they've remembered. What if we did not say anything at all?

Go There 03:10
Against the cloudy sky I see the flamingo fly The world looks so big And there are tears in my eyes The forest is moving fast But I've never felt so still The sun is setting behind the cloud And there is still so much time to kill If you're not there I'm not in a hurry to get into town If you're not there I feel no reason to rush I'm still happy to go there Down the road The cows are on their leashes I'm gonna explode I've seen where the dogs are sleepin Stuck inside But there is always a window to forest and sky and faraway volcanoes If you're not there I'm not in a hurry to get into town If you're not there I feel no reason to rush Since you won't be there I feel like I'm always runnin around If you're not there I see no reason to rush I'm so happy to go there

What's that dead in America What's that buried in America What's that rotting in America? What's that dead in America!? It's my corpse. It's my C-O-R C-O-R-P-S-E Corpse

They were here before I was born They'll be here long after I'm gone Till the wind wears them down Each peak is a snowy queen I'm in awe of this beautiful scene These shades of red and green I'll return to a mountaintop In death we don't think or speak Nor do your snowy peaks Lay me down empty at your feed We all return to mountaintops
7.
Hot Smoke 04:43
Hot smoke rolling over the radiator We choke. I can't sleep I guess I'll sleep later. Street shoutin is back Porch stick to my back We can never go back I've been finding holes in the snow again I've been pullin trees to the ground again I've been knockin holes in the snow again I've been burning trees to the ground instead There's no moon and it's hot outside

Two 03:25
Two can balance out the other One will stir and one will splash Meet me halfway to the subway Meet the whip halfway to the crack Two tornadoes can uncover Tombs you'd rather stay concealed Truth will find you undercover Two and two can break the seal Two can balance out the other Oh to suffer is to feel Clouds can cover up a blue sky Rust will cover up the steel

I am a snake 03:04
I am a stick in an endless river. I am a fish boiled in the hotspring. I am the kid hitchin down the highway Doin my way where I don't get a ride. I am a yell echo cross the valley. I am the fur shredded bloody in the dirt. I am a snake coiled on a big rock. I am a snake SssSssSssSsssssss I am a girl tryin on her shadow. I am a boy scoopin up the snake. I am a man yellin at the snake boy. I am a girl sleepin in the shade.
13.
Avocado Tree 05:40
When I'm older I won't fall apart And I promised myself that I would make a mark But I'm always afraid of where I'm gonna start So I'm sittin here and waiting for a spark In my head inside my house out on the street In a cabin by a cavern by a creek In cold cities past the clouds out on the breeze In the shadow of an avocado tree. Out on the stage inside the vase

Crow Brain 03:00
I'm in the top branch of a cedar tree I'm awake and counting sticks I found a coin down on the walking trail And in the sun I saw a shining glint Spent the day diggin it up I brought it back and now I'm doin well I think I almost have enough And once I'm done then I can fly away I think that day is comin up I think A subtle slip and then it's mine for good And this is what I'm speaking of I gotta skull and mouth and both are full I think I almost have enough

about

True to their abstract namesake, People with Bodies reminds us that, “After all, we’re just bodies in an environment.” You’ll hear those words spoken by author Mike Branch on the band’s first EP, and it’s a sentiment that’s continued to interest the band members, as the question of how to navigate the world as a body in a world full of other bodies, resounds both in their music and lives.

Their latest LP Field Notes, moves from the body to the different kinds of environment which houses it. Across the album’s fourteen tracks, which range from string-soaked soothers to kinetic indie punk, the band addresses climate anxiety (‘Hot Smoke’), the awe derived from physical beauty (‘Ode To Mountains’, ‘Lluvia en la Ciudad’, ‘Avocado Tree’), as well as more macrocosmic environments, as they tackle political and social environments on ‘My Death In America’ and ‘The Bardo’.

Recorded in a garage and wood shack in the south of Yosemite over New Year’s, 2019, the band were forced to reckon with the environment surrounding them, as a bark beetle infestation in the woods—exacerbated by climate change—threatened to disturb the recording process. Then, when high winds separated the enclosing trees from their roots, the band members feared for their lives. “There was one outside our recording shed that we thought might actually fall and kill us,” says Emily Pratt. “It felt very apt to what we were writing about — nature is beautiful but we can’t separate ourselves from our effect on it, nor our connection with it.”

Operating from a base of trust and excitement, the relationship Fil Corbitt and Emily share is symbiotic. They’re constantly working, inspiring one another, and giving comfort when it’s needed. With Mark Nesbitt, they’re a cohesive unit, and Fil describes it as “the healthiest relationship I’ve ever had.” They wish to extend that sense of unconditional communion to everyone who hears them, and it can be best experienced during one of their live shows. Equipped with a rotating selection of houseplants (they bring a new one for each tour, and they’re currently growing more from seeds during quarantine), their usual stage set-up can be likened to a living room, as a coffee table and lamp horseshoes the band in. It’s their attempt to make the interaction between audience and artist seem more familiar and less transactional.

“I’d love people to walk away comfortable, but with some new wonder or takeaway about what is possible,” says Fil. After a playthrough of Field Notes, that’s exactly what the listener should feel—a sense of both challenge and comfort—as they’re made to feel the weight of their own body, as well as all the potential it holds.
